Good clearance saved homes from Florida wildfire

Firefighters are saying that good clearance around homes kept many of them from being damaged in a 200-acre wildfire near Naples, Florida.

  1. 25 years ago it was a differnt story. I responded to wild fires in the Golden Gates area east of Naples and it was a wild west show with houses going up left and right and no coordination by any one. A home owner armed with a garden hose and pistol ran off my engine crew as we attempted to burn out around his property and defend his home,(he lost his house).

    The state and locals learned and now its a much better picture. Proper training, planning and proactive fire protection and prevention have made Florida an example of a good urban-interface program.

  2. it’s certainly a better outcome than the 800 acre fire in May 2008 when 3 homes were lost and more damaged due to lack of defensible space
