Update on fire near Cowiche, WA

The fire near Cowiche, Washington, about 12 miles northwest of Yakima, has now burned about 10,000 acres, three homes, and several outbuildings.

Three firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation and then released from the hospital. One of them also had a twisted ankle and some had some singed hair. Their engine did not fare as well, having been destroyed by the fire.

The wind which caused the fire to quickly burn thousands of acres in the first few hours has decreased, allowing firefighters to punch in some line with dozers. The evacuations have been lifted, allowing residents to return to their homes.
