Automatic wildfire defense system for homeowners

fire sensor postFlamesniffer is marketing a system for homeowners that automatically detects wildfires and activates sprinklers mounted on the home to prevent it from burning as a wildfire approaches.

The key to the system is a network of self-powered sensors that are installed around the perimeter of the property. Each sensor post has four individual sensors that detect smoke, infrared radiation, and heat. The company says fires can be detected within 1,000 feet. If multiple sensors are triggered, a wireless signal is sent to the fire protection system. A water pump is turned on, water valves are opened activating water sprinklers, and emergency services are notified.

The company can install a water tank, an electric water pump, and a battery backup which will power the system if the electricity is shut off during a fire.

The company describes the system:

The sensors can also be installed in a multiple-sensor network without the fire suppression hardware. The company claims:

Each sensor has transmitting and receiving ability so that they can communicate with each other, pinpointing the exact location and direction of wildfire. Continuous real-time updates supplied by each sensor are sent to homeowners and emergency services providing an early warning of wildfire threat.

  1. Good defensible space is a better idea. A responsible homeowner should be encouraged to create defensible space or hire professionals to do so. It would really frustrate me to see insurance companies supporting these sprinklers and not encouraging people to care for their land through tree husbandry and thinning. Thanks
