Four Texas firefighters injured, one sent to burn unit

In the northern panhandle of Texas, four firefighters were injured while working on a vegetation fire on Saturday, according to numerous media sources, including Myhighplains.com:

Update, 4/10/11, 9:45 a.m.: The Dumas Fire Chief says as of 12:59 a.m. this morning, the fire is being contained. The Cactus firefighter airlifted to Lubbock is in very critical condition.

Update, 10:59 p.m.: David Garrett, public information officer for Moore County, reports that the fire is currently at Moore County Road Q and Natural Gas Plant Rd., 4 miles south of SH 152 and about 17 miles east of Dumas. As of 9:59 p.m., the Dumas Fire Chief expected the fire to be under control within the hour.

Four firefighters have been reportedly injured. Two Dumas firefighters and one Cactus firefighter were taken to the Moore County Hospital, treated for smoke inhalation, and are in good condition. Another Cactus fireman was burned and Medivac-ed to a Lubbock burn center. His condition is unknown, but officials say he was stable when he left Dumas.

UPDATE at 9:05 a.m. MT, April 12, 2011, from Chron.com:

LUBBOCK, Texas — A firefighter is hospitalized after being critically burned while battling a wildfire in the Texas Panhandle.

A nursing supervisor at University Medical Center in Lubbock says Cactus firefighter Elias Jacquez remained in critical condition Tuesday.

Jacquez suffered third-degree burns over 60 percent of his body Saturday while fighting a fire that charred 60,000 acres about 40 miles north of Amarillo.
