A virtual aerial tour of the site of the Cedar Fire in Arizona

This is virtual flyover of the site of the Cedar Fire 10 miles south of Show Low, Arizona, showing the fire perimeter as of 10 p.m. MDT June 17. There is also a quick stop at the Show Low Airport with photos of the helicopters that assisted firefighters on the ground by dropping water.

  1. A commentary of the speed of the fire, the direction, and degree of containment would be valuable for people living in the area. Thank you for the information from the flyover. Sam A. Luce Blue AZ

    1. You will only rarely see us at Wildfire Today repeating the containment figures claimed by fire managers. Too often they are grossly inaccurate and not closely related to the actual containment of the fire — that is, the amount of fireline that has been constructed compared to the amount of open line. Sometimes the numbers given are kept artificially low for political reasons, or to make it easier to justify evacuations, or to keep the fire near the top of the priority list while competing for resources. Some incident commanders are honest about the containment percentages. Others are not.
