Wildfire burns approximately 30 homes in Timberon, New Mexico

About 67 structures have burned, including about 30 homes and numerous vehicles.

A wildfire has burned through a portion of the town of Timberon in south-central New Mexico destroying approximately 30 homes 22 air miles southeast of Alamogordo. The fire started July 13 and burned 290 acres before firefighters completed a fireline around the perimeter. 

One engine from the Timberon Volunteer Fire Department burned after a mechanical failure. An update provided Friday by incident management team said approximately 30 vehicles were destroyed or damaged, including 14 recreational vehicles.

The Type 4 incident management team headed by Caleb Finch transitioned to the Type 3 Pecos team led by Tom Barta Friday morning.

    1. Chris Wheeler the Fire Chief’s wife, told me to have checks sent to the Timberon Fire Dept. and in the remarks section of the check to be sure to write “For the FIRE FAMILIES” and 100% would go to them.

  1. “First responders continue to work around the clock to keep the fire at bay and keep the people of Timberon safe. At the state level, we’ve activated our Emergency Operations Center, made available all state resources, and requested federal assistance. And now, with this declaration of emergency, we can help the county secure funding to pay for additional resources they need as we battle this fire.” The Otero County sheriff confirmed Thursday that there are 79 structures burned, including 31 homes and two commercial buildings. Thirty-two sheds or barns, and multiple vehicles have also been lost.
