The Broken Snowshoe fire 15 miles north of McGrath, Alaska, and about 200 miles northwest of Anchorage, has burned about 5,000 acres of black spruce forest. Structure protection is occurring along the Kuskokwim river, where fish camps and cabins are at risk. Lightning started a half-dozen fires in the area over the last two days, and this one is the largest.
