Dan Packer to be remembered at memorial service

who was killed on the Panther fire in northern California on July 26, 2008, will be honored at a memorial service on July 26, 2009.

A memorial service to commemorate the anniversary of Fire Chief Dan Packer’s death while fighting a California wildfire will be held Sunday in Bonney Lake.

Mayor Neil Johnson will dedicate a pond, water fountain and bench at East Pierce Fire & Rescue’s headquarters at 18421 Old Buckley Highway in the chief’s honor.

The Chief Dan Packer Walk of Honor will be dedicated during the 3 p.m. ceremony. The walk will pay tribute to firefighters, emergency services personnel and citizens who have volunteered their time and service to the community.

The public is invited to the memorial. Guests should park at Pierce Transit’s Park & Ride facility at 184th Avenue East and Sky Island Drive East to meet the free shuttle provided.

Packer died July 26, 2008, after he was deployed to the Panther Fire in Northern California to help supervise the firefighting effort.
