Montana fires

The wildfire season shifted from mild to wild Friday after a series of thunderstorms rolled across the region, sparking at least four new fires, one of which burned near the Mann Gulch memorial in the Gates of the Mountains Wilderness.

At least three of the fires were started by lighting Thursday evening. The cause of the fourth fire, which is burning on state and private land near Dearborn, remains under investigation.

“There was a fair amount of lightning (Thursday) night in some of the storm cells that came through,” said John Grassy, spokesman for the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation. “The fire activity is beginning to pick up.”
