The state of California is suing five men for starting the Corral Fire which burned 4,901 acres in Malibu Creek State Park in November, 2007. The state is asking for $7.7 million from William Thomas Coppock, Brian Alan Anderson, Brian Franks, Eric Ullman, and Dean Allen Lavorant, all of California for starting a campfire in an area known as “the cave” and then kicking the embers into dry brush on a day with hot Santa Ana winds.
The fire destroyed 53 homes, damaged 35, and forced the evacuation of 14,000 people.
In criminal proceedings, one of the five, Brian David Franks, has agreed to a plea bargain sentence of probation and community service that requires him to testify against Anderson and Coppock.
