SmokeyBear.com has an interesting diagram of a prescribed fire. It’s very straight forward and should be easy for the public to understand. Click on it to see a larger version.

News and opinion about wildland fire
Bill,
Good point. I’ve done RX burning in four different regions (6 states) and spent nearly four months in Florida doing burns.
It’s still a confusing diagram and looks more like a wildland fire, but I agree… Things might look different in other areas.
Forgot to show the “escape”
It’s sort of the way they do it in Florida. For a very basic picture and description of what can be a very complex operation it gets the point across to non-fire people.
I’m an RXB2 and it confuses me, so I’d like to know if it confuses the public? This wouldn’t be a “typical” way of doing an RX burn in most areas.
Looks more like the description of a firing operation on a wildland fire than a prescribed fire. JMHO.
This is a commonly used ignition strategy on prescribed fires, but apparently not where you have worked. I believe the illustration was prepared by the Florida Division of Forestry.
