Anatomy of a prescribed fire

SmokeyBear.com has an interesting diagram of a prescribed fire. It’s very straight forward and should be easy for the public to understand. Click on it to see a larger version.

  1. Bill,

Good point. I’ve done RX burning in four different regions (6 states) and spent nearly four months in Florida doing burns.

It’s still a confusing diagram and looks more like a wildland fire, but I agree… Things might look different in other areas.

  2. It’s sort of the way they do it in Florida. For a very basic picture and description of what can be a very complex operation it gets the point across to non-fire people.

  3. I’m an RXB2 and it confuses me, so I’d like to know if it confuses the public? This wouldn’t be a “typical” way of doing an RX burn in most areas.

Looks more like the description of a firing operation on a wildland fire than a prescribed fire. JMHO.

    1. This is a commonly used ignition strategy on prescribed fires, but apparently not where you have worked. I believe the illustration was prepared by the Florida Division of Forestry.
