Update on Florida’s Iron Horse fire

Here is the information provided by the Florida Division of Forestry Thursday morning about the Iron Horse fire in Brevard and Volusia Counties:

Iron Horse (3) (2011-12-0161) – 25% containment – 17,500 acres (GPS) in N. Brevard and S. Volusia Counties. 1 mobile home, 3 outbuildings and 3 camp structures destroyed. 140 total structures threatened.

Three breakouts totaling 1,290 acres increased the fire size. Night operation established and improved fire lines. Number of geographic divisions has increased from 3 – 5 (Div A thru E). Significant smoke in area but I-95 and US 1 reported open with reports of smoke on the roads.

Type 2 IMT took over management of the incident.

Resources: 22 dozers (18 FDOF, 2 USFWS, 2 Miami Corp.), 10 county engines, 2 medium FDOF helicopters, 2 Single Engine Air Tankers. Total personnel: 94 (42 FDOF, 44 county, 2 FHP, 6 other). Cause: under investigation.

The firefighter that was injured may return home from the hospital today. Matt Wescott, 22, suffered second-degree burns to his face when steam shot out as he applied water to hot soil that had just been turned over by a tractor plow.
