An afternoon at Wind Cave

The March winds were blowing almost like a Santa Ana in Wind Cave National Park Sunday afternoon. When I was taking these photos I had to brace myself by leaning against something or by getting down on one knee to minimize camera movement. At one point the wind drove a few little hard kernels of snow, “corn snow” into the crevices of my coat and the camera, but that only lasted for a few seconds.

  1. Great photo’s Bill. Brings back the years I worked out west and the reason I got into the NPS 35 years ago, being outside to enjoy such things.

  2. The last two pictures look like paintings. You know the ones hanging on a wall and you say to your self “looks neat, but nothing in nature is that beautiful and vibrant”. Breathtaking. I hate buffalo and those ones did not enrage me one bit.

  3. Great shots Bill, mine up here N. of Rapid have a whole different look to them. Are you using some type of HDR process?

  4. Bill,

Brings back memories of my days spent from the Black Hills on down to the Laramie Range. This looks like some of those late October days.
