The snow crystal above was imaged with a scanning electron microscope, providing a view that is very surprising. The U.S. Department of Agriculture conducts research on snow that involves collecting and quickly storing snow at -196°C, and sputter coating it with platinum. It is then studied with the microscope in a chamber cooled to -170°C, so that it does not melt while being observed.
