NPS Fire vehicle

NPS Fire vehicleThe Department of Interior has issued authorization for certain wildland fire personnel to use a government vehicle for home-to-work transportation. The approval applies to 284 specifically identified positions “to provide immediate and timely response to wildfire incidents as they occur to decrease the loss of life, property, and public and private lands”. It is intended for fire personnel in first response fire leadership roles who may be responding to initial attack fires directly from their home after hours.

The designated wildland fire program management positions include Fire Management Officers (GS-0401), Assistant Fire Management Officers (GS-0401), and Fire Operations Specialists (GS-401/0455/0462).

  1. I agree with Micah, Bill

Ooooo.an “authorization” huh? Every agency has that, but apparently what was very 20 yrs ago is now in vogue with the 30 to 50 yrs olds in fire management

Is this something new? I remember some semblance of the very same thing 21 yrs ago in NE CA

Pretty earthshattering to get all those “authorizations” in place AGAIN after 20 or 30 yrs of sameness…..Oooooooo

    1. We received a report from a USFS employee in southern California that a few Forests in SoCal still had take-home authorizations for some fire positions — until last week when it was rescinded for “all forests”. We’re checking to see if that meant all Forest in SoCal or all Forests in the nation.

  2. I don’t think this is that new. I remember years ago when the LE Rangers filled out their annual paperwork to take vehicles home, my FMO and his rig were always included in the waiver. This could just be a reinforcement of something in place that people forgot about.

  3. I was an FPT and for years I had permission to take my vehicle home. I was frequently called out after hours to investigate fires.
