Wildfire Today now has a custom magazine on Flipboard.

If you have a tablet or a smart phone you are probably familiar with Flipboard, a news aggregation service that displays articles in a sophisticated magazine format that is easy to use and pleasing to the eye. It gets its name from the page-swipe gesture on the screen that turns to the next page. Mike McCue, CEO and co-founder of the company, said they are adding at least 200,000 new users per day. The app is available at the Android Google Play store and the Apple App Store.

In March it became possible for Flipboard users to create and curate their own custom digital magazines on the site and in July they also became available in a conventional web browser in addition to being on the smart phone and tablet apps. If you create an account at Flipboard and subscribe to a magazine it will then be easy to find.

Yesterday we created a Wildfire Today magazine at Flipboard. In addition to displaying our own articles there, we will post others that we discover. We are considering it an experiment now, and we’ll see how it works. Our web site will not change — we are just adding another way to keep up to date with what’s happening in the world of wildland fire, in addition to the web, Facebook, and Twitter. Wildfire Today is also on Google+, but we have not done much with that venue.

  1. Hi Bill – Looks great to me on iPad and in Chrome/Firefox. We wanted to create one here at firescience.gov for some of our original pubs like Fire Science Briefs and Digests, but we don’t yet have any of our original content optimized for RSS. That seems to be the key in order for content to appear/function properly. In the mean time we’ll spread the word about yours. Love it!

  2. Australian Air-Cranes article image missing from iPad and Nexus 7 tablets. (:-( Seeing placeholder icon; on iPad mini, app has space for photo, not in Nexus.

If it’s an app bug, wondering if the Flipboard people pay for software testing – I do this for a living – or if they just expect their adoring users to work for free.

    1. Thanks for the info Doug. Probably the reason the image is missing from the Australian Air-Crane article is that after I added it to Flipboard I deleted the image and replaced it with another on WildfireToday.com. I didn’t realize it would cause a problem at Flipboard.

    1. Sorry you’re having a problem, Rocksteady. However 73 people have been able to flip 696 pages. I tweaked the links in the article; maybe they will work better. THIS should work.

Anyone else have success or failure accessing Wildfire Today on Flipboard?

        1. Rocksteady, it is easy to update your browser. What browser do you have, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, or Apple, — and which version? You probably have a very old version, so without knowing which one you have it’s difficult to give you instructions, but generally, at the very top of the browser window (unless it’s an Apple product) click on the menu and look for an opportunity to get the latest version, or update, or upgrade. An out of date browser makes your computer vulnerable to viruses, hackers, and malware. I like Chrome, a Google product, which automatically updates. Newer versions of Internet Explorer can also be configured to auto update.
