The original fifth Common Denominator, long since deleted for unknown reasons, dealt with “friendly fire ” issues such as this. We have killed our own on several occasions.
I vote for bring the 5th back.
Sort of like that Crew Supt who turned his Fedco into a drip torch in, was it Region 6? Around 2.5 yrs ago…
Doesn’t matter, Mike……IT’s learned or practiced somewhere and Crew daddies are not exempt from stupid factors either….
THAT ….in my was THE classic in stupid ……so I am qualified as a FFTRS and an aircraft mechanic…….to know what tools are really used for…..
At least those folks in the above article were on an active fire and making some rough decisions………but not using a Fedco as a drip torch.
YEP…….fire is not the place for some people…
Mr Shapland
Ummmm….there have been enough poor judgement from fire fire crews and RX fire crews the last few years to fill a number of volumes..
That ” we don’t have time” for poor judgement comment may or may not hold water.
Got it for escape routes….in tsome cases, sometimes there are no “perfect” escape routes.
Standby for we don’t have time for poor judgement this fire season….
Leo
it truely is a sad state of affairs! If there are folks that still work recklessly, the wildfire community is no place for them.

These things happen, that is why you always have an escape route for when things go bad, there was no shelter deployment, and the crews threatened dealt with it. Then there will be a critique and the backfiring crews will become camp crews in the perfect world.
Greg “THESE THINGS HAPPEN” Um no they don’t. An escape route is for if things might go bad.thank God no shelter deployment. Sounds like the ignition crew, should be the camp crew! Your comment as to the perfect world. Wildland firefighting is professional business, we don’t have time for poor judgement and even less for perfect world mentalities.
Wow…..are you kidding me, was this action in IAP, no communications prior to ignition operations… sounds like total incompetence onthe Ops side of things. I read this site as often as l can when I read these posts I truely wonder, why people have been put in these situations time and time again. I am a 26 year wildfire veteran and theses posts make my blood boil. Stay safe looks like its going tobe a long season in So Cal.
