Cake honors wildland firefighters

I was flipping through the channels one day and ran across the “Cake Boss” show, where they do impressive things with flour and sugar. But I’ve never seen a fancy cake that was dedicated to wildland firefighters. Some of the detail is amazing. Check out the stitching in the belt loops.

It was cooked made constructed invented by Sarah C. Gracey, an Urban Forestry Coordinator for the Kentucky Division of Forestry. Ms. Gracey is also qualified as a Type 2 Public Information Officer.

I have discovered a new hazard in writing about wildland fire… getting very hungry while covering a story about a fire cake.

  1. Thank you so much for sharing the cake picture. Our son is a wildland fire fighter, presently fighting fires in Oregon…he is from Montana. This fire is his second one this season. The first was in Washington. There are close calls, some deaths, and lots and lots of prayers going out for all the men and women who are out there protecting people, homes, and lands. And those are just the fire fighters! There are hundreds of ground personnel, cooks, incident commanders, pilots, the list goes on…it is an attack on the fire, and it takes a small…sometimes large…army to fight! Again, thanks for sharing the cake, the story, and the web page.

  2. Someone called about this story and was concerned that I had screwed up and posted a draft, instead of a final version of the article. They figured that since there were some crossed-out words that it was not a finished product. Thanks, but it was intended to have the crossed out words.

This is what they were concerned about:

It was cooked made constructed invented by Sarah C. Gracey

This is the second time someone has pointed out an “oversight” when I used the cross-out technique. I appreciate the concern, I really do, but it’s just a writing device, a thing I do… that would never pass a 10th grade English Composition course.

By they way. I found out from Ms. Gracey after I wrote that article (when I asked if she could email me a piece of the cake 😉 ) that she made the cake to enter it in a contest. She also said:

Ha, it wouldn’t be very good – the competition requires that cakes be on Styrofoam dummies!

So the “cooked made constructed invented” turned out to be a better choice than I originally knew.

    1. I had actually wondered too if a draft was posted and then assumed it was your technique! I really appreciate your sharing my cake. It is off to the fair for competition this weekend!
