Excellent helmet cam footage of fire near Adelaide, Australia

Shot by volunteer firefighter, Ben Wilson, aka Bilson Photography, on Friday the 2nd of January, 2015. As seen on South Australian News.

The video shows some very good nozzle work and the value of quick-connect hose fittings. It could be a good training film for fighting fire in the wildland-urban interface.

  1. A lot of the trucks they use in South Australia for bush fires are designed for that pump and roll capability.

  2. When I worked for the Oregon Department of Forestry (US, state agency), we used the 1/4 turn quick connect. 99% of the time, they worked flawlessly. With the rare exception of a damaged gasket that would cause them to leak a bit, or one that would get beaten up (ours were aluminum), or gummed up, and not want to disconnect, they were way nicer to work with compared to the standard fittings I used for the bulk of my fire years (USFS).

  3. A couple of years ago I attended a training with the MT DNRC called Cat Camp.

The organizers invited several Canadian engine crews to train with us. They had not done a lot with pump and roll tactics and were looking to expand their training.

I was skeptical at first when it came to quick connect hoses, but our Canadian brothers could build and tear down a hose lay FAST! Not once did they look for an adapter!
