Wildfires in Southeastern Europe

There are many wildfires burning in Southeastern Europe in the countries of Albania, Montenegro, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. We were unable to find much information about them on English language web sites.

The red dots in the photo represent heat detected by the satellite.

  1. My wife and I just got back today from the western Greek island of Zakynthos where they have had 72 fires so far this year. They unfortunately also have idiots over there who love the kinky thrill of starting fires and watching from a distance. This latest fire (started three days ago) which was huge and ate up 1000s of acres of forests Grape Vineyards and Olive Orchards was supposedly started by a couple of Turkish guys. We were already scheduled for a bus tour of the island and they allowed us to go through some of the devastated areas.

When we flew on down last Tuesday from our place in Göteborg Sweden, we saw all the smoke and fires everywhere starting from Slovenia all the way to Greece just as you described on the map. It was very sad to see. Our tour driver said though that it will be better for the Greek Police to catch those Turkish guys because if the citizens in the small mountain towns do, they will take matters into their own hands and kill the guys on the spot. World is literally crazy now.

    Tanks for this map, Kevin

  2. Thanks for the report, Bill: I never knew that there were radical environmental extremists stopping timber sales in those countries that led to these fires. Global Climate Change couldn’t have any impact though, could it? And all these countries have “let burn” policies too?

    1. Why are you bringing into the discussion any divisive ideological political spitting points Emmett ??? Bill never said anything about this.

      1. An obviously ineffective attempt at satire. Seems that “radical Enviros” get all the credit for fires that escape IA in the western US.
