Fire crews and organizations have produced some excellent videos showing the highlights of their fire activities in 2020. We like to post them each year, and we used to be able to do it with one article, but so far this year we have found 28 — too many for one article. So this year we will do it intermittently over a two-week period.

Here is Volume 4.

Midewin Hotshots

Iron Mountain Handcrew

  1. As far as I’m concerned, I’m not questioning tactics. The issues that I’ve seen, in person or on these videos, address safety and fundamental principles of firefighting. It has nothing to do with a specific crew, these concerns are widespread, in all functions.
For anyone to say “lighten up” or “it’s all in good fun” obviously doesn’t take the job seriously enough when things get dicey, and they can in a hurry. That’s why it’s important to keep your sleeves rolled down and your gloves on when the wind suddenly shifts and you get hit with fire, or you slip and fall on hot ash. Or when you all work 2 feet from each other and a tool slips out of someone’s hand or rocks come sliding down the hill and take 2 of you out because you weren’t spread out. There is no reason to work that close together.
Go have your fun and film it if you want to have a laugh with your buddies, I just don’t think the general public, who doesn’t know what the real job is, would get a kick out of it. The engine crew was showing actual production while filming. That’s what I would be proud of.

    1. Are you concerned enough to contact the Sups of these crews directly of these “issues” or just making internet comments? If the latter then its just faux concern. If the former…tell us how that’s going.

  2. Oh no, more crew videos? Let’s get super mad and talk about how much better we are at firefighting than the people on these crews.

      1. I would wager 90% of hotshot crews make crew videos, but most of us have the good sense not to share them. Some of us do this job for reasons beyond being insta-famous or tinder profiles.
