The Batterman Fire spread rapidly Sunday after it started at about 12:15 p.m. PDT running through grass and brush. The fire is east of Wenatchee, Washington about a mile east of the Pangborn Memorial Airport. It was pushed to the east by a wind that increased throughout the afternoon from the west and northwest at 15 to 22 mph after 5 p.m. while the relative humidity was in the teens and the temperature topped out at 97 degrees.
Monday morning evacuation orders (Level 3) were in effect for Rock Island Grade Road.
On Sunday helicopters and airtankers dropped water and retardant in areas inaccessible to engines. As of Monday at 8 a.m. no structures had been destroyed.
The Southeast Washington Type 3 Interagency Incident Management Team led by Incident Commander Walter Escobar assumed command of the incident Sunday night. Firefighters worked through the night on structure protection and to secure the perimeter near Rock Island Road.
On Monday more firefighting resources from out of the area are expected to arrive.
The forecast for Monday is for 93 degrees, winds out of the northwest at 8 to 16 mph, with 21 percent relative humidity.
I was in the laundromat with a beautiful grandma that was leaving the next day with her sweet family her military family that was going to Washington the very next day and she was so excited she was going with her son and daughter-in-law and four grandchildren and we chatted for an hour and a half while I was folding my clothes and she was simply in there to launder a single piece of her own I’m sorry her own I’m sorry her own I’m sorry her own her own her own bedding that’s all she wanted to do and pack it she was so delightful she had sold her car and was moving from San Diego to move and she was so so sweet oh my God and she’s moving into fire from the fires of San Diego she’s moving into Washington and she was so excited and I said I pray for you to love Washington I said you’re going to love it and I hugged her and kissed her and oh my God I pray she’s going to be okay oh my God I pray she’s going to be okay she was so adorable please give me an update please please give me an update
Looking at the photos on http://www.komonews.com, there will be some great grass growing next year, assuming there are some spring rains.
My name is Susan Lilly and I was talking to a very sweet woman who was traveling to Washington with her family in the military and quite frankly she was adorable she was the grandma of a military family that was going to Washington with her daughter and son and four grandchildren leaving on Sunday morning I’m so sad to hear about this
