Firefighters save three residents as brush fire burns under home

Firefighters near Charleston, West Virginia arrived at a brush fire as it began to burn under a mobile home. Two vehicles parked nearby were already on fire as the firefighters kicked in the  structure’s door, woke the three sleeping residents, and helped them, one on crutches, to evacuate their home.

Here is an excerpt from an article at WSAZ.com:

Firefighters say if they’d arrived at the scene of a brush fire in Kanawha County as little as five minutes later, it could have easily turned fatal.

The fire broke out and spread through about six acres of a hillside on Valley Grove Road in the north end of Charleston around 1 p.m. Sunday.

Firefighters say when they showed up at a mobile home on the hill, two cars parked next to it were on fire, and flames were beginning to spread underneath the home.

They say they had to kick in the front door and wake three people who were inside sleeping and help them out. One of them was on crutches.

Emberly Lucas, who was sleeping in the home while the fire was spreading, says you hear plenty of talk about brush fires but never expect to wake up surrounded by one.

“You don’t think it could happen to you, and when it does, it’s scary to think you could have died in five minutes,” Lucas said.

Crews were able to put the fire out before it spread to the inside of the home.
