Two large air tankers and a lead plane were used Tuesday afternoon to slow the spread of the “Begoso” prescribed fire about 14 miles southeast of Pecos, New Mexico on the Santa Fe National Forest. A spokesperson for the Forest told Wildfire Today that the fire, planned to be 100 180 acres, is “not out of control, but it is burning actively”. She did not know how many acres have been burned as of 3:35 p.m. MT on Wednesday. The air tankers have returned to their base and the only aircraft currently being used on the fire is one helicopter for observation.
Late Tuesday night it put up heavy smoke, prompting travelers on Interstate 25 to flood the nearby Rowe Fire Department with phone calls.
Weather from the Las Vegas, NM airport, about 20 miles northeast of the burn site, recorded 18-24 mph winds over the last 24 hours.
