Fire conditions in New England

Matt sent us this information today about fires in the northeast United States:

Southern New England is having a bona fide summer fire season this year. I’ve had 2/10ths of an inch at my house since June 23, although areas got 1+” yesterday of spotty rain.

Anyway, came across two nice news articles from the past week:

A five acre fire in pine barrens on Cape Cod that took a couple days to mop up, which has really great photos included with it:

And a 50 acre fire in Holden that got a real nice TV news story. Far different terrain the on the Cape, the Cape is flat and sandy and they use their Brush Breakers to create a path to drive up to the fire. In Holden it’s hilly, upland hardwoods with an understory of Mountain Laurel.

Both those fires started on July 5th, which was a 100º day (as well as the 6th). The Holden fire was still active through Friday.
