Smokey Bear sign stolen in Wisconsin

Smokey sign stolen

Sunday morning between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. a thief with a chain saw made several cuts with the saw to remove the six feet tall image of Smokey Bear, weighing between 35 and 40 pounds, from a fire prevention sign in Vernon, Wisconsin.

And speaking of Smokey, here’s a throwback image of President Dwight D. Eisenhower holding a Smokey doll. It appears that Smokey is wearing a shirt — usually he is naked from the waist up. Either that or he has a badge pinned directly to his chest.

  1. Fear not, this is actually “workforce realignment”. The plywood smokey is being sent to the Everglades to replace the engines and helicopters they realigned out of there.

  2. Could be Agency asset reallocation teams moving Smokey from one agency to another or one fire station or another……having fun at someone else’s cost

  3. The first time we put up one of those big Smokey signs on the Coconino, someone stole the bear. Not long after, it was seen in a dorm window on the NAU campus. We got it back from the not too bright student.
