Red flag warnings 4-7-2012

The map of the Red Flag warnings for today, April 7, looks very different from yesterday’s map, when the edges of some of the warning areas in the north-central part of the country were apparently defined by state boundaries.

  1. Morning Bill,
Since I got my start in PA with an NGO and Type 2 crews, I know the criteria for Red Flag warnings in that state involve 10 hour fuel moisture dipping below a threshold, as well as winds and RH. The fuel moisture thing being representative of when PA has had its historically “large” fires. I forget exactly what that threshold is. I’ve spent two seasons in R8 burning and coming into my second season in R4 on an IHC, I must say that knowing the criteria for red flag can be daunting across the country. All the more reason to be an educated fire fighter.
