  1. Hi Bill – I looked up the fires that are contributing to this smoke map at one of my favorite webs: USFS Active Fire Maps.

    There’s a big message that Active Fire Maps is due to be discontinued at the end of the year, and replaced by the FIRMS Fire Map. Of course, the FIRMS map looks much fancier and must have cost millions to construct, but will it really be better than a simple jpeg file that shows the satellite data of fire locations several times per day? (Why does the gov’t make things more complicated? Don’t answer; rhetorical question.)
