The latest mapping shows that 4,713 acres have burned on the Medano fire in Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado. A red flag warning is in effect. Bill Hannenberg’s Type 2 team has assumed command of the fire. The emphasis on the east side is preparing defensible space around structures. Yesterday on the west side crews removed trees across the Medano Pass Road. Similar work continues today, Monday.
According to the Incident Management Team:
Long-range planning for the fire is well underway. Probabilities of fire spread in various directions are being evaluated based on maps of vegetation, decades of weather records, computer models, and judgment of experienced local fire managers. Response plans to be implemented if needed include building-by-building protection plans. The fire’s likely effects on the land ahead of the fire are also considered.
The Team is now providing fire information on InciWeb, so Wildfire Today will not be reporting on the fire as much as we did previously.
