Thursday night Nov. 17 at about 10 p.m. the Hot Springs Fire District responded to a report of a fire in the kitchen of the Gathering Place restaurant in Hot Springs, South Dakota. The restaurant is one of several businesses on the ground floor of a historic sandstone two-story building which has apartments on the top floor. The fire extended quite a bit beyond the kitchen, and firefighters worked the fire into the night. All photos were taken by Bill Gabbert.

The three photos below were taken the day after the fire.
I am saddened by the loss of business(es). For the time being, Hot Springs is now home to another sandstone shell. I am thankful that no one (firemen or upstairs dwellers) was injured. I pray that the losses can be turned into a positive, eventually, and that the businesses and homes lost can somehow be salvaged.
Nice photo’s Bill. I’m guessing that the structural FD is volunteer and it looks like they made a good save on the building. My hat is off to the brave men and women of these small town departments who serve without pay.
Thanks BMorgan. Yes, it is a volunteer FD and they deserve our thanks for all the hours they put in.
I am so sad for them…this is an awesome building with AWESOME owners…I love them dearly and will have them in my heart and prayers as they move forward…keep your heads up gals. 🙂
i worked there during this past summer the owners are nice people to work for

Oh I’m so sorry to see this. I used to live in Hot Springs and have been by this beautiful old building many times……
I have been by this building–what a shame it’s now been affected by a fire.
