USFS seeks applicants for 69 Forest AFMO jobs

The U.S. Forest Service has a vacancy announcement that lists 69 Forest Assistant Fire Management Officer positions they are trying to fill. I’ve never heard of such a large scale announcement for dozens of relatively high-level fire positions. As far as I can tell, they are all GS 11/12 jobs in the Miscellaneous Administration and Program Series, 0301.

An excerpt:

This position is established on a Forest Service unit. The incumbent serves as a Forest Assistant Fire Management Officer (FFMO) responsible for providing leadership and program direction for the unit’s fire and aviation management program. The incumbent is responsible for coordinating the development of short and long-range fire management programs, fire management activities on the unit.

Below is a screen shot of a portion of the announcement.

  1. Posting’s for jobs from OCR’s don’t reflect an actual position that is open. For instance find the fire dispatch OCR and listed is a duty station of Deer River, MN. Deer River is a RD on the Chippewa NF, the Chippewa NF dispatch office is in Grand Rapids, MN and its a combined office with the Superior NF dispatch in the Minnesota Interagency Fire Center. So counting a position from an OCR as open is not the case at all. There hasn’t been a dispatch opening in MN at all since 2009

  2. This shows the amount of folks in fire that are retiring at a high rate, and the snowball effect that it creates through the rest of the fire orgainzations. There are still many folks that will retire in the next 5 years and how the agencies recruit and fill the vancies will be interesting.

  3. I’d have to agree with Justin- The Forest Service loves their OCR’s- but they sure confuse folks in the field! We get calls here at the Chattanooga Airtanker Base on a fairly regular basis from folks who saw a Tanker base OCR that listed Chattanooga as a duty station…sorry folks- we’re not hiring…

  4. Looks like an open continuous roster… nothing new there. They’ve been doing that for a few years now instead of listing each vacancy individually. Just lists all the locations that may possibly have a vacancy under that position description, not the locations that actually have an open spot.
