The original Smokey Bear song was the genesis of a misunderstanding of Smokey’s middle name: “The”. A songwriter added it because he thought it was needed in the phraseology of the music. But Smokey does not have a middle name. He is SMOKEY BEAR.
Bill, I don’t know how you find all this historical wildfire video stuff, but what an absolutely great compilation of Smokey media! And you’re right, several of my Forest Service friends’ faces turn red and their neck veins pop out if I inadvertently throw that “The” word in the middle of Smokey Bear’s name.
