Joe James sent us a link to a video of one of the fires that occurred March 10 in Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore (in northwest Indiana) that were fought by National Park Service personnel as well as several other local fire departments. Wildfire Today previously covered the numerous fires that burned in the greater Chicago area that day.

Mr. James said the video was shot near the Douglas Center in Gary, Indiana. Their completed prescribed fires slowed the spread of another fire the same day that was heading toward the community of Ogden Dunes. One unit that they burned last fall did not burn at all in the wildfire, possibly saving 30 to 40 homes in Miller, Mr. James said.

National Guard helicopters fight fires in Indiana

The Indiana National Guard has started to aggressively suppress fires that have been burning since October 21 when aircraft flares or ammunition ignited the fires on Camp Atterbury near Edinburgh, Indiana . The Guard’s Blackhawk helicopters are using 660-gallon water buckets to put out the fires that have burned 2,400 acres over the last three weeks.

The National Guard is feeling pressure from businesses and local residents that have been complaining about the smoke.
