Firefighter takes compelling photos of Florida wildfire.

All photos by firefighter Dave Grubich.

A fire in Martin County, Florida burned 136 acres Sunday night and early Monday morning before firefighters stopped the spread at 3:21 a.m. near Fox Brown Road.

Wildland firefighter Dave Grubich took these excellent photos from inside a firefighting dozer building containment line.

One of the challenges the dozer operators faced on the fire were the wet areas, and avoiding becoming mired in the mud.

Red Flag Warnings, March 7, 2016

Elevated fire danger in six states on Monday.

The National Weather Service has issued Red Flag Warnings for areas in Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. The forecast calls for gusty winds and relative humidities in the teens or single digits in some locations.

The map was current as of 9:20 a.m. MDT on Monday. Red Flag Warnings can change throughout the day as the National Weather Service offices around the country update and revise their forecasts and maps. For the most current data visit this NWS site.

Last installment of photos from the Dudley Fire

Dudley Fire, Buffalo Gap, South Dakota

As promised, here is the last batch of photos from the Dudley Fire that damaged a structure and burned two acres in Buffalo Gap, about 24 miles south of Rapid City, South Dakota.

In addition to state and federal engines, there was a sizable contingent of resources from volunteer fire departments that helped fight the fire. And there were quite a few local residents that showed up carrying shovels. The woman in these photos found a McCleod tool somewhere and wanted to pitch in and help the firefighters, but after a wind shift she found the fire spreading toward her and had to make a strategic withdrawal. The local residents helped pull hose, put in a bit of scratch line, and operated a tractor and a dozer to move the large burning cottonwood trees after they were felled, and helped spread the burning hay so it could be mopped up.

Fire weather warnings, March 6, 2016

The National Weather Service has issued Red Flag Warnings and Fire Weather Watches for areas in eight states: Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas New Mexico, and Arizona. As usual, strong winds accompanied by low relative humidities are the culprit.

It is a mixed bag of forecasts. The Watch areas, in yellow, are for critical fire weather on Monday. But some of the areas identified as being under a Red Flag Warning, in red, are also for Monday’s weather; other red areas are for Sunday. Check your local forecast for details.

Our preference would be for the red areas to only represent the present day’s conditions. At a predetermined time, for instance 4:30 p.m. or 6 p.m. the map would change to reflect the next day’s forecast.

But we are pleased that the National Weather Service has reduced their tendency to draw red flag areas along the imaginary lines of state borders.

The map was current as of 9:40 a.m. MDT on Sunday. Red Flag Warnings can change throughout the day as the National Weather Service offices around the country update and revise their forecasts and maps. For the most current data visit this NWS site.
